AVHRR Images - showing very large icebergs in Prydz Bay (1996)

These images form a sequence showing the progress of several very large icebergs into and across Prydz Bay in late 1996. The first of the large bergs (85 km x 18 km) is seen on 6 August 1996 in the very top right corner of the image d08061a4.gif. An area of light tone midway between Davis and the berg is sea ice trapped by bergs grounded on "Four Ladies Bank", centred about 67 S 78.5 E, and clearly defined in the image of 28 September (d09281b4.gif) The apparent size and shape of this area as neighbouring sea ice moves with the wind. The elongate berg is by now located to the west of this area where it became grounded during September.

A cluster of five large bergs is seen in the image of 7 September (d09071a4.gif) between latitudes 66 and 67 S and longitudes 76.5 and 78.5 E. They are highlighted in colour in bergs_0907.gif. The source of these bergs was a single large iceberg, area about 3,300 sq. km., that began moving in late May 1996 from its grounding position adjacent to the east end of the West Ice Shelf.

It can be difficult to distinguish the bergs against the background of sea ice. The images have been taken directly from those sent back by the AMC at Casey. Most have not been accurately renavigated so there can be apparent movement with respect to the map graticule, which can be used as a guide to geographic positions in the image. The real movement can be judged by the relative placement of the icebergs with respect to fixed land features.

Four large icebergs continue to move as a group with the ocean current across Prydz Bay to the west. By 22 October they are located at about 73 E (d10222b4.gif)

Images prefixed with a "d" are of the Davis region. The front of the Amery Ice Shelf is visible in the lower part of the images between longitudes 70 and 74 E). Images prefixed with an "m" are of the Mawson region centred further to the west.

Update:- [04 Dec 96]

The berg grounded on the west side of "Four Ladies Bank" started moving again soon after 11 November. It is now moving across Prydz Bay (d12031a2.gif) in the trail of the other very large bergs which are now to the northeast to east of Mawson (m12031b2.gif).
